5 HACKS FOR THE FREELANCER
Today anywhere can be your office space if you want it to. We had a chat with freelance marketing consultant Sara Öhman and got to know all about how she has gotten to nail the freelancing lifestyle and her best tips for those who also want to give it a go.
“At least there’s no problem getting approval from the boss”
Working from a tent in the forest is just one of the pretty cool stuff you can do as a freelancer. For Sara nature is something essential for her well-being and she makes sure to spend as much of her free time as possible out in the mountains. And even though freelancing can come across as a lonely way of working many digital nomads have found their way of making it everything else but that.
– In the beginning, it was quite lonely, mostly because it was all still so new to me. But over the years you meet friends working in the same way, Sara says. When in Stockholm she often works from a coworking space together with other like-minded people who have become her colleagues in a way.

Meeting people sharing the same lifestyle is key as freelancing is no nine to five. Going on workations or staying a few extra days at that sweet conference location is no hassle, as there’s no need to get back to the office.
– At least there’s no problem getting approval from the boss, Sara says.
Curious about the freelancing lifestyle yet?
Here are some tips on how to get you started and things to have in mind.
5 TIPS FOR SUCCEEDING AS A FREELANCER
1. Have something desirable to offer from the very beginning
This was the tip I got myself when starting out. It could be just a small thing you show at the first meeting that makes you stand out from the crowd.
2. Be flexible
Knowing what your strengths are can be valuable but at the same time its important as a freelancer to be flexible, as that’s why companies do hire freelancers. The best thing you can do is to go out and meet people and see where you fit in.
3. Do not be afraid to overload yourself with work
Sometimes projects delay, so by overloading myself with work I’ll always have something to do. You can manage your workload to a certain point, but at times you’ve also got to work in chunks. For one period you might have to work around the clock, and for another one things move more slow.
4. Surround yourself with good people
Working with people you work well with is super important.
5. Always do projects that challenge you
The feeling of personal development should not be underestimated. Of course, the easiest way to go is to offer what you’ve always offered and what you know you’re good at. Keeping an 80/20 rule for yourself where you have that 80 % that you already know (or 75 if you’re extra daring) and the rest of it you’ll learn as you go is a great way to challenge yourself and constantly develop as a professional.
– If you swing by Underverket in Stockholm or you find yourself up in the Funäs mountains (Funäsfjällen) make sure to say hi!
